Researchers say FDA only went halfway when it mandated folic acid fortification

Sometimes the progress you make only serves to underline how far you've yet to go.

The Food and Drug Administration mandated that beginning in 1998 enriched flour, rice and pasta be fortified with folic acid in an effort to reduce birth defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
