In the 1930s, mercury was king in the hills of Central Oregon, and the Horse Heaven Mine was a major producer.
In its heyday, the mine 15 miles east of Ashwood offered up 100,000 tons of cinnabar (mercury ore), and 15,000 75-pound flasks of quicksilver (liquid mercury).
