Gary Kaesemeyer of La Pine missed more than a month of school last year because of undiagnosed asthma. There is no cure for asthma, but it can be controlled.

Last year, as a seventh-grader at La Pine Middle School, Gary Kaesemeyer missed 38 days of school. So far this year, the 13-year-old has been absent only twice.

The difference was the simple diagnosis of the leading cause of missed days of school, some 14 million nationwide. Gary had undiagnosed....
