A sign nailed to a tree overlooking grassy Paulina Prairie implores visitors with crudely carved words. "Sad Hill," it says, "Tread Softly."

Tombstones on the knoll hint at sad stories.

Says one: "Melvin Raper, 1892-1914. Died in a Tent of Tuberculosis."
