Traffic deaths rise in Oregon despite nationwide decline

Official says no unusual cause explains state's 17 percent increase in fatalities

WASHINGTON - In stark contrast to the rest of the country, traffic deaths in Oregon shot up 17 percent last year, the second-largest increase among all states, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
