In the spring of 1989, Steve DePatie and Yoko Funabashi opened a sushi restaurant in downtown Bend.

Then a ski town with scarcely 20,000 people, Bend seemed a crazy place to try to sell Japanese food, DePatie remembers his friends telling him.
