Air tankers try to douse fires before they spread

As the first black tendrils of smoke rose from the forest south of Bend on Wednesday, radios crackled 28 miles to the north at the Redmond Air Tanker Base.

It was 1:40 p.m., and the first line of defense of the U.S. wildland firefighting strategy had swung into action.
