Afghanistan looks something like the sparse, arid plains of Eastern Oregon, according to Janel Voth, a 1990 Bend High graduate who recently returned from an assignment with the U.S. Army in Kandahar.

"But at least in Eastern Oregon, you can drive somewhere different," Voth said.
