Mentally ill inmates find no solace in county jail

The wait for a bed in the state mental hospital is a burden on corrections

At any given time, as many as 15 percent of the inmates housed at the Deschutes County Jail are suffering from a diagnosed mental illness, such as schizophrenia or a bipolar disorder.

But jails do not have the facilities or funding to care for the mentally ill, officials say, and sheriffs....
