Keeping these bees alive, Marti Meyer and Stephen Harris, center, inspect a beehive panel as Al James, left, marks down one hive's condition and Erika Kightlinger, right, gets a panel from a hive ready last week at Bishop Farms, east of Bend.
The four, members of the Central Oregon Beekeepers Association, have helped check 221 boxes of bees that were recovered from the scene of an accident near Madras. The bees spent five days on U.S. Highway 97 before they were recovered and shipped to Bishop Farms.
Harris said he and his team saved most of the bees . On April 26, they just finished looking through every recovered hive to determine the health of the colonies. He is now working to place the bee colonies in local organic farms and gardens and with other beekeepers. e
