Revival of a prime spot

May 27, 2009 4:00 am

Revival of a prime spot, After nearly five months dark, one of downtown Bend’s most prominent restaurant locations is officially back in business with the opening Tuesday of 900 Wall in the former home of the Merenda Wine Bar and Restaurant, at 900 N.W. Wall St. Here, patrons fill seats shortly after the establishment opened to the public at 5 p.m.
General Manager Mike Millette said he expected a mild turnout. Reservations were not needed and the restaurant did not advertise Tuesday’s opening. The restaurant was open by invitation only Sunday and Monday evenings.
Millette, who formerly managed Merenda, said noise was a common complaint about Merenda, which closed Jan. 4. Though the hardwood floors and exposed brick walls remain, the restaurant has been outfitted with acoustic ceiling tiles and several booths to help reduce noise, Millette said.
“So far, people have loved the menu,” Millette said. “The quality is excellent, but we think we have a menu that hits all price points with a really strong wine list.”
900 Wall follows two other restaurant openings downtown this spring. Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails in April moved into the Bond Street location vacated by Volo, and Joolz earlier this month moved into the Wall Street spot formerly occupied by Bistro Corlise.
