Uncovering a 120-year-old massacre, Chinese miners search for gold along the Salmon River. The Salmon River is a major tributary of the Snake River, where as many as 34 Chinese miners were massacred in 1887.

Too close for comfort, Walter McKnight and his daughter Libby, 10, look at the rotted roots of a broken spruce tree leaning precariously over their house on Northwest Harmon Boulevard on Friday. The tree blew over during the windstorm earlier in the day. McKnight said the house was built in 1923, and he believes the tree is about the same age. A weather spotter for the National Weather Service reported a gust of 52 mph in southwest Bend just before 10 a.m. Friday, but winds are expected to be lighter today.
