Competing in costume, Drew Oldfield donning a Viking costume will be a safety volunteer for the kayak portion of Pole Pedal Paddle on the Deschutes River during the event Saturday. Oldfield an instructor at Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe has volunteered for the event for the past seven years and always dresses in costume.

Bend is full of world-class athletes, but how many of them can perform while wearing a wig? While many competitors at today's multisport Pole Pedal Paddle event will don traditional athletic apparel, a strong minority will opt to make a bolder statement with their attire.“It's fun when you....MORE

More than 2,900 to race in PPP today

A total of 2,922 racers have officially registered to take part in today’s U. S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle, according to the event organizers. That total is about 200 fewer than last year’s record 3,130, but race officials are nonetheless excited about the high number of participants.....MORE

Olympian Kris Freeman wins men's PPP, Kris Freeman nears the finish line at the Pole Pedal Paddle today at Les Schwab Amphitheater. It was the first victory in the elite men's division for the 14-time U.S. nordic ski champion.

Olympian and U. S. Nordic Ski Team member Kris Freeman, of Thornton, N. H, won the men's elite division of the Pole Pedal Paddle today, defeating defending champion Andrew Boone of Bend. Threat to win?, American Kris Freeman competes during the men's 15-kilometer cross-country race at the 2010 Olympics in Whistler, British Columbia. Freeman will be in Bend this weekend to compete in the elite men's division of the Pole Pedal Paddle.
