What: Five "lux eco-modern" homes
Where: Corner of Northwest 12th Street and Newport Avenue
Developer/designer: Abacus GC
Contact: Cary Martinez, 390-0880
Details: A set of houses described by their builders as "midcentury modern" are going up across Northwest 12th Street from the Newport Avenue Market
Designed and built by Abacus GC, a Bend-based partnership, the $850,000 to $950,000 homes are designed to create a hip, urban living environment with close attention paid to using environmentally sensitive materials, Abacus partner Cary Martinez said.
The 2,000-square-foot buildings are strikingly narrow, at 17 1/2 feet, and long, at 70 feet deep, with a variety of rooflines. Interior touches include the liberal use of Southern Oregon madrone wood, along with heated floors, solar power systems, nontoxic sealers and a motion-detection- triggered, fresh-air recovery system that pumps exhaust fumes out of the garage each time a car is parked, Martinez said.
Each building's solid wood interior doors will be topped with transoms to bring light throughout the house, and all five homes will be pre-wired for high-speed networking connections and home theaters.
The first home is scheduled for completion by the end of August, Martinez said. The next will be finished in mid-September, with the rest finishing up about every two weeks through the end of October.
