Redmond is the geographic heart of Central Oregon, and continues to be among the fastest-growing cities in the state.
History
Redmond is named for one of the first couples to settle a homestead in the area, Frank and Josephine Redmond. The city was formally incorporated on July 6, 1910. The Redmonds, along with many others, settled here because of its proximity to one of the area's main irrigation canals and the railroad running through the center of town.
Amenities
Many residents now choose to live in Redmond and commute to work elsewhere because home prices are generally lower in Redmond than in Bend and Sisters.
Downtown Redmond features historic buildings, dozens of shops and several restaurants. The burgeoning south side of the city is home to Roberts Field, Central Oregon's only airport with commercial airline service. Nearby is the 132-acre Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center, a primary location for rodeos, concerts and myriad other events.
Recreation & Entertainment
Redmond is within an hour's drive to most of Central Oregon's best known scenic and recreation attractions. A few examples are Smith Rock State Park, Lake Billy Chinook, the Ochoco Mountains, and the Cascade Mountain Range. The Eagle Crest destination resort community is located roughly 10 miles west of the city, and Crooked River Ranch offers scenic golfing and a ranch-like community about 10 miles to the north of Redmond. In addition, the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center offers rodeos, trade shows, the county fair and more.
