Stabbing puts Bend man in jail, cousin in hospital

Published: March 19. 2013 4:00AM PST

A Bend man faces assault charges after he allegedly stabbed his cousin Monday evening after she tried to break up a fight between him and another man at a northeast Bend apartment.

Matthew Sartain, 21, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, said Sgt. Dan Ritchie of the Bend Police Department.

His cousin, Amanda Penner, 20, of Bend, was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend, where she was treated for a stab wound to the chest and released.

Sartain was fighting with a man, whose name was not released, at Sartain’s apartment on the 100 block of Northeast Sixth Street, Ritchie said. He said Sartain stabbed Penner with a knife when she got between him and the other man.

The apartment is across the street from Bend High School, but Ritchie said the stabbing didn’t involve the school in any way.

Sartain was being held Monday night in lieu of $55,000 bail at the Deschutes County Jail, according to the jail website.
