Bend firefighters douse illegal burn

Published: March 19. 2013 4:00AM PST

Bend firefighters responded at 12:07 p.m. Monday to an intentional burn that escaped its confines.

Bend Fire Capt. Karl Findling reported the fire, pushed by winds, escaped a ditch and burned into a row of trees. The property tenant set the fire at 63540 Cricketwood Road to clear unwanted growth along a rural road easement, but had no burn permit, Findling reported. The property is just beyond city limits.

One engine and four firefighters extinguished the fire, which burned into ponderosa pines and junipers and narrowly missed a power pole.

Outdoor burning is prohibited within city limits. Call the burn information line, 541-322-6335, prior to igniting a permitted fire.
