BASEBALL

Beavers complete sweep of Arizona — Jake Rodriguez drove in a career-best five runs Sunday to lead Oregon State to an 8-4 Pac-12 Conference win over Arizona at Hi Corbett Field. The victory gave the Beavers a sweep of the Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., for the first time ever. Michael Conforto belted his sixth home run of the year for Oregon State, which improved to 19-1 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play while Arizona dropped to 15-8 and 0-3. Brandon Jackson, the third of five Beaver pitchers, was credited with the win, hiking his record this season to 4-0. OSU returns home Friday to open a three-game series with Arizona State. Game time Friday is 5:35 p.m.

Trojans take one from Ducks — After comeback victories over USC on Friday and Saturday, Oregon never led Sunday in a 5-3 Pac-12 Conference loss to the Trojans at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles. Jake Hernandez delivered the big hit of the game for USC (8-11 overall, 1-2 Pac-12), a three-run double in the fourth inning that put the Trojans on top 4-0. Oregon’s five hits were highlighted by a solo home run by Mitchell Tolman in the fifth inning, his first career homer. The Ducks added two runs in the eighth inning on an RBI double by J.J. Altobelli and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Payne. Oregon (15-6, 2-1) opens a three-game home series with Arizona on Friday; game time at PK Park in Eugene is 6 p.m.

RUGBY

Roughriders edged by Corvallis — Bend’s Roughriders lost a 21-20 decision to Corvallis in their first league match of the spring season Saturday at Central Oregon Community College in Bend. Nate Rompel, Joel Abbott and Craig Branstad each scored a try for the Roughriders, and Clint Peterson added a conversion and a penalty kick for Bend. Next up for the Roughriders is a March 30 game at Medford.

Bend Blues notch home victory — Jacob Fritz scored 13 points on one try and four conversions to lead the Bend Blues high school rugby team to a 38-13 win over the Westside Alliance of Portland in a match played Saturday at Central Oregon Community College in Bend. Also scoring tries for the Blues were Isaiah Felton, Michael Hageman, Jeff Durante, Nolan Holmgren and Lane Chrisman. The Blues, now 1-1 in Rugby Oregon’s Division 1, travel to McMinnville on Saturday to play the Valley Rams.

LACROSSE

Clackamas downs Bend United — Tori Landin scored three goals for the Bend United high school girls team, but the local squad lost 8-4 to Clackamas on Sunday at Summit High School. Kama Remley added a goal for Bend United, which slipped to 0-2.

Winter sports

Maze wins giant slalom — Tina Maze rebounded from her heartbreaking World Cup slalom title loss to American Mikaela Shiffrin by ending her historic season with a giant slalom victory on Sunday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Maze performed her trademark celebration cartwheel in the finish area after first-run leader Tessa Worley of France fell 0.35 seconds behind her winning two-run time of 2 minutes, 16.67 seconds. Lara Gut of Switzerland was third, 1.38 back.

Neureuther wins final — Felix Neureuther of Germany edged overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher in a men’s season-ending slalom race on Sunday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Neureuther hung on to his opening-leg lead to finish 0.36 seconds ahead of Austrian Hirscher in a two-run time of 1 minute, 52.20 seconds. Ivica Kostelic, the 2011 overall World Cup champion from Croatia, was third, trailing Neureuther by 0.51.
