Joseph Edward "Ed" Vaughn passed away Monday, March 11, 2013 in Medford, Oregon. He was born May 10, 1937 in Wilmington, DE to Joseph Burton and Alice Todd
Vaughn. On March 11, 1967 he married Nancy Niedermeyer, who survives.
Ed earned a bachelors degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and a masters of forestry from Duke University. He spent twenty-five years working for the U.S. Forest Service on the Umpqua, Rogue and Deschutes National Forests. He worked for the Fort Rock Ranger District from 1974-1985. There he was responsible for resource management of recreational sites, and later served as district silviculturist. Following his retirement from the Forest Service in 1985, Ed worked twelve years for Microsphere Computers in Bend.
In 1994, he began planting a pear orchard on his and Nancy's family farm near Jacksonville, OR. He became engaged in the local farming community and served as a board member and advisory committee member of various agricultural and natural resource organizations. In October, 2012 he was honored as a member of the Diamond Pioneer Agricultural Career Achievement Registry by Oregon State University, College of Agricultural Science.
Amateur radio was Ed's favorite hobby. He became a licensed amateur radio operator, K7YLO, when in high school. He was past president of Central Oregon Radio Amateur Club. He was noted for being unusually knowledgeable and willing to share his expertise. At the time of his death, he was a member of Central Oregon DX Club and Rogue Valley Amateur Radio Club.
Ed is survived by his sons, Michael Bruce Vaughn (Kimberly Maynard) and Alan Todd Vaughn (Michelle Brandt); his sister, Margaret Vaughn Harvey (A. Dabney Harvey) of Richmond VA; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Burton Louis Vaughn.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. March 23, 2013 at Hanley Farm, 1053 Hanley Rd., Central Point, OR. Memorial donations may be made to CASA of Central Oregon, Central Oregon Environmental Center, or a charity of choice.
