The Deschutes County District Attorney has released new information about the weapons used in two recent local slayings that took place within a week of one another.
According to District Attorney Patrick Flaherty, Lawrence Loeffler, 86, shot his wife, 83-year-old Betty Loeffler, twice with a .25-caliber Beretta on the morning of Jan. 28 at their home outside La Pine. Flaherty declined to say where the woman’s gunshot wounds were located.
Loeffler is currently being held without bail in the Deschutes County jail, facing a single charge of murder.
Flaherty also provided new details in the shooting death of 31-year-old David Ryder. Luke Wirkkala, 32, is accused of shooting Ryder, who was visiting Wirkkala’s Bend home at the time, in the early morning hours of Feb. 4.
Flaherty said Wirkkala fired one round from a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun.
Wirkkala is also being held in the Deschutes County jail without bail.
