The Horned Hand welcomes Tony Holiday and The 44s

Published: February 15. 2013 4:00AM PST

Attention fans of traditional blues music! There are a couple bands playing The Horned Hand (507 N.W. Colorado Ave., Bend) this week that you might dig. So grab a shovel:

• On Saturday, Tony Holiday and The Velvetones stop in for an evening of steady smoldering. The Velvetones are a tight, able blues band, but their leader is out front for a reason. Holiday is a killer harmonica blower with an impressive voice for this particular brand of Southern-fried blues. Hear ’em at www.reverbnation.com/tony holidayandthevelvetones. Satori Bob opens. 8 p.m. $5.

• Thursday will bring the return of The 44s, a quartet from Los Angeles that makes a raw and powerful blues-rock racket. Think real-deal, old-school cats like Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters amped up for the 21st century and dipped in gritty pomade and you have some idea of what The 44s do. Local surf-rockers Shade 13 open. 8 p.m. $5.
