"After a long struggle with back pain, He left quietly in his sleep. Our lives remain forever touched. May he rest in peace."

Frederick Walters, of Bend, was born August 1, 1936 to Sidney and Irene Walters in Calgary, Alberta. As a boy and young man, he was an avid ice hockey player. He entered the workforce at a young age and served as a dedicated Line Man in Canada for several years, before taking a position in the United States. He was curious about the "Yanks" and moved to San Diego. Continuing in his trade, he traveled to Denver, Colorado where he worked, lived, and played ice hockey for a short time. Fred then transferred to Libby, Montana. Still the devoted employee, he was then employed by Pacific Power & Light.

Fred and Ruth were married in 1967 in Calgary, and he became an instant father to four young girls, Terri Dale, Rhonda Lee, Loreen Ruth, and Patricia Elaine. This was a brave act by anyone's standards to say the least. Fred and Ruth celebrated their union and soon added another girl Shelli Jo to the family, and all resided in Libby.

They moved to Seaside, Oregon and all saw the ocean for the first time. He was a hardworking man, always willing to take trouble calls to get in some overtime. It takes a certain kind of character to be willing to climb a power pole in the dead of night in the middle of torrential rain and high winds. He did what it took to provide a comfortable home, and be able to take the girls to Disneyland, Yellowstone Park, and the Grand Canyon, to name a few. Camping all the way, the girls learned some valuable life lessons on those trips.

He transferred to Bend, Oregon in 1979 with PP&L, and retired in 1998. He enjoyed camping and fishing for steelhead and salmon. A special joy in his life was his little dog, Wiley.

Fred is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Loreen (Paul) Cooper (Monument, OR), Patricia Walters and Shelli Walters (Bend, OR); two grand- children, Hana and Max Cooper (Monument, OR); sisters, Norma Andersen (B.C.) and Sherry (Conrad) Kathol (Alberta); sister- in-law, Norma Walters (Alberta); and several nieces and nephews (all in Canada).

He was predeceased by his mother and father; two daughters, Terri (age 12) and Rhonda (age 28); his brother, Ron, and his little dog, Wiley.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, Deschutes Memorial Gardens North Hwy 97 in Bend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Humane Society of Central Oregon, 61170 SE 27th St., Bend, OR 97702.
