Bend professional cyclist Ryan Trebon is one of six riders named to the elite men’s team for the 2013 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, USA Cycling announced on Monday.
Trebon, 31, made Team USA as an automatic selection for being ranked among the top three American riders in the UCI world standings. Trebon is ranked 16th in the world in the latest UCI (International Cycling Union) rankings and second among U.S. riders. The 2013 world championships are slated for Feb. 2-3 in Louisville, Ky., and will be the first edition of the event to take place outside of Europe. In 2012, Trebon took 18th place at the world championships in Belgium.
The Cannondale-Clement rider finished seventh in the elite men’s race on Sunday at the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships in Verona, Wis. He was one of five Bend riders who contested the elite men’s race. Also from Bend, Barry Wicks finished in 10th place, Adam Craig was 16th, Damian Schmitt took 49th place, and Brennan Wodtli finished 56th.
Another Oregon rider, Jade Wilcoxson, of Talent, made the six-rider elite women’s squad after finishing a surprising second behind Katie Compton, who has already locked up this season’s World Cup title with the final race of the series scheduled for this Sunday.
