Sunriver area may get new path

Published: January 02. 2013 4:00AM PST

The Deschutes National Forest is proposing to build an approximately 6-mile paved path from Sunriver to the Forest Service’s Lava Lands Visitor Center. A public comment period on the project’s environmental assessment will continue through Jan. 11.

If approved, the path would create a safe passage for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling from Sunriver to the Lava Lands Visitor Center, the Deschutes River Trail and recreation sites around the Benham East Day Use area.

Other proposed changes include additional parking spaces at the Sunriver boundary and more parking, a vault toilet and a bike rack at the visitor center.

The path project is located in the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District, roughly 18 miles south of Bend and northeast of Sunriver. The district office is at 63095 Deschutes Market Road in Bend. Public comments can be made over the phone, in writing or in person.
