Basketball
Youth coaches needed — The Bend Park & Recreation District is seeking volunteer coaches for its leagues for boys and girls in grades three through five. The time commitment for the program, which starts Jan. 7 and concludes March 9, is about five hours per week. Teams will practice twice per week in the evenings and play games on Saturdays. Coaches may choose practice days, times and locations. Applicants must have a clean criminal history and an understanding of basketball. Coaching experience preferred. Training is provided. Nordic Skiing
Central Oregonians at World Cup — Two residents with Central Oregon ties competed in the FIS Cross Country World Cup event staged this past Friday and Saturday in Quebec City, Quebec. Bend resident Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess placed 38th of 73 skiers in the men’s skate-ski sprint, won by Emil Joensson. Zoe Roy finished 58th in the women’s skate-ski sprint, in which American Kikkan Randall prevailed. Roy grew up in Bend but is a Canadian citizen and currently resides in Canmore, Alberta.
Climbing
Locals place second — The Bend Endurance Academy climbing team earned a second-place finish in the USA Climbing Western Region Bouldering Championships, staged this past weekend in Bozeman, Mont. The BEA participants were competing against climbers from Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota. In addition to the team win, BEA climbers Lukas Strauss-Wise (male youth C), Olivia Brumwell (female youth B) and Tristan Helmich (male youth A) won their respective divisions, while Walker Davis (second, male youth B) and Abby Black (third, female youth A) added top-three finishes. In all, nine of the 13 BEA participants recorded top-seven finishes to advance to next month’s divisional championships in Tigard. Other BEA divisional qualifiers were Leah Pfeiffer (fifth, female youth C), Kyle Anderson (fifth, male youth A), Iris Flattery (sixth, female youth C) and Brady Pfeiffer (seventh, male youth D). Other BEA participants were Riley Joyce, Jack Groh, Logan Danek and Ethan Flattery.
Running
Bend youths at national meet — Five youths representing the Central Oregon Running Klub (CORK) competed in the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, staged Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. Jack Strang led the Central Oregon group with an 11th-place finish among 204 runners in the bantam boys division (birth years 2002-2003). Strang completed the 3-kilometer course in 11 minutes, 38.32 seconds. Also competing for CORK, Olivia Brooks was 30th of 236 participants in the youth girls race (birth years 1998-1999, 4K, 15:37.13). Other CORK participants were Kelsey Washenberger, 119th of 263 runners in the midget girls division (birth years 2000-2001, 3K, 12:30.17); Sarah Reeves (youth girls, 133rd, 16:53.00); and Emma Brooks, 153rd among midget girls (12:50.04). Special Olympics
Registration for winter sports — Registration for winter 2013 sports for the Special Olympics Oregon High Desert program is taking place through the mail.Winter 2013 sports are basketball, powerlifting and snow sports (alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing). Regional competitions in all three sports are scheduled for early March. To participate, medical and registration forms must be received by Jan. 3. Forms can be sent to P.O. Box 6772, Bend, OR 97708. Swimming
Local sets record — Tom Landis, of Camp Sherman, set a USA Swimming Northwest Zone record on Saturday in the fourth annual All-Around Challenge Meet in Bend. Representing the Central Oregon Masters Aquatics club, Sherman swam a time of 3 minutes. 0.67 seconds in the 200 individual medley (short-course meters).
