Gregory Greenleaf Young of Bend, OR, since 2008 and Minneapolis, MN, since 1935, died peacefully in his Bend home on December 5, 2012. Greg fought a valiant 2 1/2 year battle with liver cancer. He was born on August 13, 1935, in Minneapolis, MN, to Mabel and Edward Young. On June 16, 1961, he married Donna Anderson, his wife of 51 years.
He is survived by loving wife, Donna; daughter, Sally Young of Seattle WA; daughter, Virginia Young and partner, Janie Lowe of Portland, OR; son, Michael Young and wife, Angela Mack; and granddaughter, Lucia Mack Young of Seattle, WA; brother, Edward Young of Madison, WI; sister, Sally Young of Madison, WI; and brother, Jim Young of Minneapolis, MN: and many devoted nieces, nephews and friends.
Greg was an active member in the Episcopal Church, serving on the boards of Episcopal Community Services and the Episcopal Group Home. He was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Minneapolis, MN, St. Martins by the Lake Episcopal Church, in Minnetonka Beach, MN and Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend, OR, serving on the vestries in multiple roles.
Greg attended the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor and Masters degrees.
Greg worked for IBM 26 years as a senior systems engineer. He continued to work in information technology as a consultant.
With a love for life, Greg was an avid cook, skier, sailor and reader. He loved music, theater and lively political discussions. He had a dry sense of humor and a contagious love of life. He taught his family and friends how to live with passion and die with grace. We thank him for all that he gave us and will work to carry on his spirit each day.
