PORTLAND — The new chairman of Washington County Republicans has quit, hours after The Oregonian newspaper published an email in which he equated the Democratic Party with communism and called liberalism an “atheistic cult."
The newspaper reported Wednesday that Gary Bray said he’s returning to his lumber business.
State GOP officials quickly distanced themselves from the email, and GOP legislators pressed Bray to resign.
Washington is a swing county pivotal to Republican efforts to reduce Democratic dominance of Oregon politics.
