OREGON CITY — A Molalla woman who wanted to help stray dogs has pleaded guilty to charges the animals were left outdoors in unsanitary conditions without adequate food or clean water.

Prosecutors say that despite advice and warnings from the Humane Society, Violet Helen Chenoweth still failed to properly care for the dogs. Chenoweth took in more than 20 dogs as well as cats, ducks and miniature ponies.

Chenoweth said she suffers from depression and medical problems that limited her ability to respond. She was accused of animal neglect.

The Oregonian reports she was sentenced Wednesday to five years on probation and 40 hours of community service.
