Controlled burns scheduled

Published: November 24. 2012 4:00AM PST

Deschutes National Forest fuels specialists will start burning piles as soon as this Tuesday in two locations near Bend and Sunriver, according to a press release.

The burning will take place near the Skyliners neighborhood along Skyliners Road and near Sunriver along Cottonwood Road, FS Road 600, and adjacent to the west side of U.S. Highway 97 between Lava Lands and Sunriver at Sunriver’s South Century Exit.

The burning could last a day or two. Burning will also continue within and around the La Pine basin, on Pine Mountain, west of Sunriver, adjacent to Eagle Crest resort and north of Newberry Crater.

No road closures are planned, but smoke could be visible. Piles likely will smolder and burn for several days, according to the Forest Service.

If smoke drifts onto roads, motorists should slow down and use their headlights, the Forest Service said.
