This year, local libraries will host a Mock Caldecott contest to choose the best picture book of the year, modeled after the Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually by the American Library Association. The Deschutes Public Library system will host the events starting with workshops about the criteria and process. Staff members will review past winners and discuss possible winners for this year.
Community members are invited to visit the library’s website to check out the candidates and comment (www .deschuteslibrary .org/celebrate75).
In January, the library system will shorten the list and then each library will host discussions about the finalists. Online voting will be Jan. 21. The real Caldecott winner will be chosen by the ALA on Jan. 28.
Library staff members hope to include local teachers, writers, artists, students and parents in the discussion about the best works of children’s literature.
Workshops that will talk about the Caldecott Medal, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, take place at the following dates and locations:
• Downtown Bend Public Library — 1 p.m. Saturday
• Sisters Public Library — 1:30 p.m. Sunday
• Redmond Public Library — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday
• Sunriver Area Public Library — 4:30 p.m. Thursday
