Carmen Basilio, 85: Welterweight and middleweight boxing champion during the 1950s. Known for his toughness, he fought two brutal bouts with Sugar Ray Robinson, winning his middleweight title in 1957 and then losing it to him. Died Wednesday in Rochester, N.Y.

Frances Hashimoto, 69: One of the most influential business leaders in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles and a longtime guardian of Japanese cultural traditions. As president of Mikawaya, her family's food business, she invented the popular fusion dessert known as mochi ice cream. Died of lung cancer Sunday in Pasadena, Calif.
