Lew Hollander defied age once again, finishing the Ironman World Championship on Saturday in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
At 82 years of age, Hollander is the oldest triathlete to complete the world championship race, breaking the mark he set in 2011.
This year, the Terrebonne resident finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run in 16 hours, 45 minutes, 52 seconds. A model of consistency, Hollander reached the finish line three seconds faster than the mark he posted a year ago in the event. Hollander, who said Sunday that this year’s race was his 23rd world championship, took third place in the men’s 80-plus age division, behind Japan’s Hiromu Inada (15:38:25) and fellow American Lyle Roberts (16:40:46). About 1,900 participants completed Saturday’s race.
