DEQ fines Army for sewage issues

HERMISTON — The state Department of Environmental Quality has fined the U.S. Army almost $4,000 for failing to monitor sewage treatment systems at the Umatilla Chemical Depot near Hermiston.

The environmental agency issued permits to the Army to operate sewage treatment and disposal systems at the depot.

The state says the Army violated those permits earlier this year when it did not monitor wastewater for ammonia, nitrates and various pollutants.

The Army has until Monday to appeal.

The East Oregonian newspaper reported that the sewage systems are not part of the soon-to-be-closed Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility.
