John was born in Portland, Oregon, to James Hartford and Eunice (Nelson) Cunningham. John attended Hillsboro High School, then went on to graduate from Oregon State University in 1984. John started his career first as a high school science teacher and girls basketball coach in St. Paul, Oregon, then Westview High School in Beaverton. He went on to earn his masters degree in administration at George Fox College.
In 2003, he and his family moved to Redmond to become Vice Principal at Hartman Middle School, then Principal at Lynch Elementary, and Principal at Elton Gregory Middle School.
John was a Christian man who loved his family and community. His favorite activities were family time, anything involving the great outdoors, cooking, mentoring children, watching and playing sports and making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Maryann; daughter, Haley; son, Kevin; and many family and friends.
