Orvis to close Bend store

Published: October 10. 2012 4:00AM PST

The Orvis clothing and fly-fishing store in Bend’s Old Mill District will close Jan. 31.

Old Mill District officials said the Vermont-based company was shifting its focus to larger markets and reducing the number of stores nationwide.

The Old Mill is talking with several tenants about possibly moving into the Orvis building at 320 S.W. Powerhouse Drive, according to a news release.

Orvis came to Bend in August 2008. It was the first store the company opened in Oregon, according to The Bulletin’s archives.

Shortly after opening, the store and the Old Mill built an 18-hole fly casting course for fishing enthusiasts to practice casting.

Old Mill spokeswoman Noelle Fredland said officials hope to keep the course open.
