A warming fire lit by an early-morning canoeist escaped Saturday, growing to 1 1/2 acres before it was extinguished.
The Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center said the canoeist called to report the fire on the lava flow side of the river near Aspen Camp, upstream from Lava Island Falls, at around 5 a.m. Water-dropping helicopters, hand crews and an engine crew brought the fire under control, and it was declared contained at around 6:30 p.m.
Dispatchers said due to the rocky terrain in the area surrounding the fire, the potential for it to grow was limited.
