Caregiver sued in theft of dead man’s benefits

EUGENE — The federal government has filed a lawsuit over more than $200,000 in retirement benefits it says a Cottage Grove woman collected after secretly burying the man the checks were intended for.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports the suit names Carel Cody and her mother, Johna Mae Cook.

Cody cared for elderly and disabled people in her foster home. She is accused in a criminal case involving the Social Security and Medicare benefits intended for John Henry Arnold, who died in the mid-1990s. Her trial is scheduled for November.

The civil suit filed last week says Cody began transferring assets in June to her mother, leaving herself insolvent. The suit seeks to hold both responsible for the money.
