The Pole Creek Fire has grown to 15,000 acres today. The blaze, six miles southwest of Sisters, is 10 percent contained, fire officials said this afternoon.
Residents near the fire were again reminded today to prepare to leave at a moment’s notice.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office conducted a level 2 pre-evacuation alert through a recorded Emergency Phone Notification (EPN) utilizing the reverse 9-1-1 system. This alert went out to the areas of Crossroads, Edgington and Remuda Roads and the south side of Sisters.
This notice was initiated because of increased fire behavior that has occurred over the past 24 hours and to remind citizens they should remain highly vigilant during these situations.
The fire grew from 5,677 acres Friday.
Since it was first detected Sept. 9, the fire’s growth has been largely to the west, toward North Sister.
Highway 242 to McKenzie Pass and a section of the Pacific Crest Trail have been closed, and residents of the Sisters area with respiratory problems are advised to stay inside to avoid smoky air.
