Bend's Ashton Eaton won the Olympic decathlon in London Thursday with a total of 8,869 points. Trey Hardee of the U.S. won the silver with 8,671 points, and Leonel Suarez of Cuba claimed the bronze with 8,523.
Eaton just missed the Olympic decathlon record of 8,893 points.
It was the first 1-2 finish in the Olympic decathlon for the U.S. since 1956 when Milt Campbell and Rafer Johnson won gold and silver.
Eaton set a personal best in the javelin of 203 feet, 3 inches, then ran the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 33.59 seconds to secure the gold medal.
