After setting decathlon world records in the first two events of the day — the 100 meters and the long jump — Bend's Ashton Eaton placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches, at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene. He went on to post the best height in the high jump, at 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches. Through four events, Eaton leads the overall scoring with a total of 3,755 points. Trey Hardee is second with 3,550 points.

One event remains on Friday — the 400 meters — before the final five events take place Saturday.
