Oxford jazz series hosts Darrell Grant

Published: February 17. 2012 4:00AM PST

Another holiday brings another fine concert in the Jazz at the Oxford series in Bend.

Monday is President’s Day, and this weekend’s headliner is one of the real power players in Portland’s jazz scene: pianist and composer Darrell Grant, an energetic master on the keys.

Grant was raised in Denver before moving to New York City, where he became one of the busiest and most sought after pianists in jazz.

In 1997, he moved to Portland, where he’s now a tenured professor at Portland State University.

Grant will be joined in Bend by special guests, including drummer Brian Blade, who leads his own band and has also played with folks like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bill Frisell and Wayne Shorter.

As always, Jazz at the Oxford tickets go quickly, so don’t dilly-dally.

Darrell Grant, with drummer Brian Blade and special guests; 8 tonight, 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday; tonight is sold out, Saturday shows are $30 (plus fees in advance at www.bendticket.com); The Oxford Hotel, 10 N.W. Minnesota Ave., Bend; www.oxfordhotelbend.com or 541-382-8436.
