John Cruz brings island style to Bend

Published: January 22. 2010 4:00AM PST

It’s cold. It’s gray. It’s January in Central Oregon.

It is time to do what you can to stave off cabin fever, OK?

Here’s one option: Singer-songwriter John Cruz is one of Hawaii’s most popular artists, thanks to his endlessly summery, serene island style of music, which sounds pretty much exactly how you might expect. Gently plucked Breedlove guitars, easygoing melodies, a velvety singing voice, life-is-good lyrics — Cruz has it all. (He even got to play Barack Obama’s inauguration alongside Jack Johnson. Very cool.)

If you’re one of those folks with a soft spot in your heart for Hawaii, this is one cabin-fever cure you cannot miss. For a preview, hit up www.johncruz.com and soak in the aural sunshine.

John Cruz ; 8 p.m. Wednesday, doors open 7 p.m.; $10 advance at www.bendticket.com, $12 at the door; Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom, 24 N.W. Greenwood Ave., Bend; 541-388-8331 or www.myspace .com/silvermoonbrewing.
