Silver Moon hosts Unkle Nancy and fam

Published: January 08. 2010 4:00AM PST

If you were picking an artist to sort of embody the spirit of Bend’s Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom, you could do worse than Unkle Nancy & The Family Jewels.

The Oregon-based quartet plays a dark, mischievous brand of Americana that’s heavily influenced by the early-20th-century heyday of vaudeville and ragtime. The band’s music clatters and clunks thanks to percussive instruments like the bass, banjo and washboard, and there’s some kazoo here and there for good measure.

Frontman Unkle Nancy is the ringleader of this circus, though, barking songs like “Vagabond Tramp” and “Stumblin’ Drunk” with a rough-hewn gargle that would make Tom Waits proud.
