Driver cited in crash that closed Highway 97 near Sunriver

Last modified: December 31. 2009 6:23AM PST

Two drivers involved in a multi-vehicle crash that closed South Highway 97 near Sunriver for about 90 minutes late yesterday afternoon have been identified, and one of them was cited, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said in a press release this morning.

Police determined that a 2001 Dodge Durango driven by Sue Myers, of Vincennes, Indiana, was traveling northbound on Highway 97. Myers came upon ice on the highway and began to lose control of her vehicle. Her car turned into the path of a 2007 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer driven by Steven Maher of Wheatland, California. Myers' vehicle was underneath the trailer portion when the trailer drove over her vehicle to leave the roadway.

The collision caused Maher's tractor and trailer to overturn. A third vehicle collided with the dislodged axle of the overturned trailer, causing minor damage to the third vehicle.

All Highway 97 traffic was stopped for approximately 90 minutes during the rescue and vehicle recovery efforts.

Myers was cited for several traffic violations. Alcohol impairment does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is on-going, according to the sheriff's office.

Myers was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with non-life threatening injuries by ground ambulance.
