Victoria Huntzicker Burton

June 8, 1910 - Dec. 7, 2009

Victoria Huntzicker Burton, last of 5 children of Victor Emmanuel Huntzicker and Blanche Ring Huntzicker, died Dec. 7, 2009, in Corvallis. She was born June 8, 1910, in Salt Lake City. She finished first grade in Neillsville, Wisconsin, and then moved to Milwaukee, WI, where she finished high school. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Arizona as an English major where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

She then travelled to Montpelier, in southern France to study for a masters degree received in 1935. In 1965, she earned an MLS at Purdue University. During her 99 years of life, she had taught French and English in Wisconsin and British Columbia, and served as an elementary school teacher and school librarian in Indiana and Oregon.

In 1937, she and Frank Burton were married and remained so for 62 years until his death. They had three children, (Helen Schuckel of Duncan, BC, Robert Burton of Corvallis, OR and Ann Goetcheus, of New York City), 11 grandchildren, and 13 great- grandchildren.

She and Frank lived in Princeton, New Jersey, Madison, Wisconsin, and Lake Village Indiana, before in 1966, falling in love with Oregon and settling in a house on the Deschutes River outside of Redmond where they lived for more than 30 years. For the last 11 years she lived at Conifer House, in Corvallis.

She loved her life and was well-loved, by her husband who died in 1998, by her family, by the young, and not-so-young, talented, modest people, often women, whom she encouraged in a quiet way to seek the pleasures of education and self-fulfillment.
