A measure in Sisters to annex 4 acres of land into the city was passing handily late Tuesday night.
The land is on South Locust Street, near the city’s wastewater treatment facility. The property is currently owned by the city and, if annexation is approved, will be transferred to the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District for use as a training center. In exchange, the fire district previously gave a piece of land it owned in northwest Sisters to the city for the construction of a recycling center.
As of about 11 p.m. Tuesday, annexation was leading 72 to 28 percent.
Contacted before voting ended Tuesday evening, Sisters Mayor Lon Kellstrom said the measure was “about as straightforward and uncontroversial an issue as you’re going to get,” and expected few people would vote against it.
Annexation will allow the city to run utilities to the training center. The fire district plans to pave and fence the area, and build a training tower up to 30 feet tall.
City Manager Eileen Stein said the annexation and transfer of the property to the fire district would have no impact on the city’s tax base, as both the city and the fire district are non-taxed public entities.
