A shelter's revenue solution

Published: November 04. 2009 4:00AM PST

Michael Matney, of Redmond, backs his trailer into a space in the new RV storage facility at its opening Tuesday behind The Humane Society of Redmond. The Humane Society opened the storage facility, a roughly 1-acre fenced lot, as a revenue-generator for the organization. The site, with room for about 50 RVs, boats or trailers, is surrounded by 6-foot fence topped by 2 feet of barbed wire, lit at night and has 24/7 video monitoring. The facility cost roughly $20,000 to construct.

“Anything you need parked, we'll take care of it for you,” said Don Wayne, who sits on the Humane Society's board of directors.

The facility is charging $1.50 per linear foot for standard-width RVs, he said, adding that it already has 11 reservations.

At full capacity, the storage facility could generate about $3,000 per month for the Humane Society, which will put the money toward operations and paying back a loan from Deschutes County that was issued to help the shelter pay off debts. Wayne said the Humane Society still owes the county more than $1 million and has other revenue sources dedicated to helping pay that back, mostly funds from a trust naming the Humane Society as beneficiary.
