Artists gather to help educate Indian kids

Published: October 23. 2009 4:00AM PST

The old Boomtown record store building will buzz again Sunday night as Rise Up International holds its third annual “Art For India” benefit.

The event will feature three murals with artwork from more than 40 local artists and a kids mural created by local youth. Sections of the canvas will be sold to support Rise Up’s school for “dalits” (or “untouchables”) in India, which provides free education for more than 250 underprivileged children there.

You’re reading this in the music section, though, because the night’s sounds will be provided by local singer-songwriters Leif James and Chris Chabot, plus young Bend-based rockers The Autonomics, fresh off a terrific performance at Bend Roots Revival. (Visit the Frequency blog and search “Autonomics” to read about that.)

Expect food, beverages, a silent auction and a slide presentation of Rise Up’s work in India.

Rise Up’s Art for India ; 5-9 p.m. Sunday; $15 adults, $10 for ages 10-21, free for kids younger than 10; old Boomtown location, 910 N.W. Harriman St., Bend; 800-344-1540, art@rise upinternational.com or www .riseupindia.wordpress.com.
