Harry D. Young

Feb. 11, 1916 - October 2, 2009

Harry D. Young, 93, of Glide, Oregon passed away, peacefully, in the early hours of October 2nd, in Roseburg, OR. Born February 11, 1916 in Kent, WA, Harry was the eldest of three children born to John U. and Lottie Young, of Kent, WA.

Harry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Audrey Olson Young.

A graduate of the University of Washingtons schools of civil engineering and forestry, he distinguished himself in the logging industry with many contributions to the design and management of the logging industry.

In the 1960s, the YBY Corporation expanded to the Bend area, where Harry ran the first cable logging operation east of the Cascades since 1928. The logging operation was featured in Loggers World as well as the Bend Bulletin during that time as being a positive progressive for the industry. A logging contract for the Federated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indians, followed, and resulted in lasting friendships with the tribal foresters; something Harry was especially proud of. Around that same time, the company added Sitka, Alaska, operated by Don Brown, to the sides already being run by his brother, Jack, in Oakridge, OR.

Retirement, to Harry, meant switching from working hard in the woods of the Northwest, to the ranching lifestyle; something he always wanted to do. Buying an alfalfa and corn farm on the banks of the Snake River, near Adrian, allowed him to pursue another favorite pursuit, pheasant hunting. As ranching became an interest, he moved his Hereford cattle to the west side of the mountains, to Seven Springs Ranch, where he remained busy until moving into a retirement community in Roseburg.

Private graveside services will be held in Roseburg, October 14, with a 1 p.m. Celebration of Life planned by the family for friends and colleagues, at Seven Springs Ranch, 10879 Buckhorn Road, in Glide, OR. For info go to www.thesevensprings.net

The family asks in lieu of floral tributes, to consider making a contribution to The American Diabetes Assoc., 380 SE Spokane St. Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202.
