Willie Carmichael, Blackstrap perform

Published: October 09. 2009 4:00AM PST

• Local singer-songwriter Willie Carmichael has been pretty quiet this year, performing his droll, slice-of-life folk songs only occasionally. On Sunday, though, he’ll come out of hiding for a gig at Dan Chavers’ studio, located at 61532 American Loop in Bend. Chavers’ studio is a warehouse in an industrial park but with the low-key, listening-focused atmosphere of a house concert. Carmichael will perform at 4 p.m., and the suggested donation is $10 for one person, and $15 for two. Contact: www .danchavers.com/series.html.

• Bend’s Blackstrap bluegrass boys have been around for years, even if the faces have changed now and again. No matter who’s in the loop, though, the band excels at airtight versions of old bluegrass standards, current classics and a few original numbers, too. On Wednesday, they’ll play a free show at 7 p.m. at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, at 700 N.W. Bond St., in Bend. Familiarize yourself at www.myspace .com/blackstrapmusic.
